This match is emblematic because Renato Gaúcho is regarded as the greatest Grêmio player of all time and here he is facing his former team for the first time, surely a lot of emotions would pass through his mind and maybe even could harm his game. Flamengo would play without Zico, Bebeto would wear the number 10 and the hardworking Kita would be the striker in his place, the latter was the highlight of the Inter de Limeira that was champion of the 1986 São Paulo State championship. The Grêmio team had the best defence of the championship and featured the future legendary Benfica, PSG, Cruzeiro and Seleção player Valdo, the very good players and future famous head coaches in Brazil Cuca and Paulo Bonamigo, and the good defenders Alfinete, Luís Eduardo and Casemiro. Grêmio's head coach was the legendary "Felipão" Scolari.
