This match features two archrivals that held most of the core pieces of Brazil's 1994 WC team: Mazinho and the future genius Romário playing for Vasco da Gama and Jorginho, Leonardo, Bebeto and Zinho for Flamengo (and a young Aldair that got a taste of the game too). The two goalkeepers, Zé Carlos and Acácio, were 1990 WC national team members. A number of iconic veterans from the 1970s/1980s were playing as well: Zico, Leandro (now a central defender, after a series of injuries), Edinho and Andrade, who aged very well, for Flamengo and Roberto Dinamite for Vasco da Gama. This match also featured the 1996 Euro player for Spain's national team and Deportivo La Coruña legend Donato, Vivinho, one of the best Brazilian wingers of the late 1980s, and Geovani, considered a great prospect, for Vasco da Gama and the MVP (Bola de Ouro) of the 1987 Brazilian National First Division Renato Gaúcho for Flamengo, who had the best individual year of his legendary career. The tense atmosphere that always surrounds a Flamengo v Vasco was also there, for better and for worse.
